UPSC Civil Services Examination Overview
The Civil Services Examination (CSE), conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), is one of the most prestigious and competitive examinations in India. It selects candidates for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and over 20 other Group A and B central services. Every year, lakhs of aspirants compete for around 1,000 vacancies through a rigorous three-stage process.
Exam Pattern
The exam has three stages: Preliminary (objective screening test with two papers — General Studies and CSAT), Mains (descriptive — 9 papers including 4 General Studies papers, 1 Essay, 2 Optional subject papers, and 2 qualifying language papers), and Personality Test / Interview (275 marks). Mains contributes 1750 marks, while the Interview adds 275 marks, making the total 2025 marks.

Preparation Strategy
Effective UPSC preparation requires 12–18 months of focused study. Start with NCERTs (Class 6–12), then move to standard reference books like Laxmikanth (Polity), Spectrum (History), and Ramesh Singh (Economy). Daily newspaper reading (The Hindu / Indian Express) is essential for current affairs. Practice answer writing for Mains from day one. Take prelims mock tests starting 6 months before the exam.
