GATE Complete Guide
GATE Examination Overview
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level entrance exam jointly conducted by the IITs and IISc Bangalore on behalf of the National Coordination Board of MoE, Government of India. GATE is the gateway to M.Tech and PhD programs at IITs, IISc, NITs, and other top institutes. It is also widely used by Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) such as IOCL, ONGC, BHEL, NTPC, and Power Grid for direct recruitment.
Exam Pattern
GATE is a 3-hour computer-based test of 100 marks. The paper has 65 questions, divided into General Aptitude (15 marks) and the chosen technical subject (85 marks). Question types include MCQs (with negative marking), Multiple Select Questions, and Numerical Answer Type (no negative marking). Candidates can appear in any one of 30 papers covering different engineering, science, and humanities streams.
Subjects Covered
- General Aptitude — verbal ability, quantitative reasoning, data interpretation
- Engineering Mathematics — linear algebra, calculus, probability, numerical methods
- Core Subject — papers in CSE, Mechanical, Electrical, ECE, Civil, Chemical, etc.
Preparation Strategy
Start preparation 8–12 months in advance. Build a rock-solid foundation in Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude — these are scoring areas. Use standard reference books such as Made Easy and Ace Academy. Solve previous 15 years' GATE papers — repetition of concepts is high. Take topic-wise tests, then full-length mocks every week in the last 2 months. Maintain short revision notes for formulas and concepts.
Career Opportunities
A high GATE score opens multiple paths: M.Tech / PhD admissions at IITs and IISc with monthly stipends, lucrative PSU jobs (Pay Level 10) at organizations like ONGC, IOCL, and NTPC, and research opportunities at premier labs such as DRDO, BARC, and ISRO. GATE also enables foreign opportunities for higher studies at top global universities such as NUS, NTU, and TUM.
