JEE Main Complete Guide

JEE Main Overview

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is the gateway to undergraduate engineering programs at NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). It is also the qualifying test for JEE Advanced, which leads to admission into the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). JEE Main is held twice a year (January and April sessions) and the better of the two scores is considered for ranking.

Exam Pattern

JEE Main has two papers — Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech and Paper 2 for B.Arch / B.Planning. Paper 1 is a 3-hour computer-based test with 90 questions (30 each in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics). Out of these, candidates must answer 75 (25 from each subject — 20 MCQs + 5 numerical, of which 5 are mandatory). Each correct answer carries +4, with –1 for incorrect MCQs.

Subjects Covered

  • Physics — mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics, modern physics
  • Chemistry — physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry from Class 11 and 12
  • Mathematics — algebra, calculus, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, vectors, probability

Preparation Strategy

Begin with a deep mastery of NCERT textbooks for Class 11 and 12 — they form the foundation. Move to standard reference books such as HC Verma (Physics), NCERT + OP Tandon (Chemistry), and Cengage / Arihant (Mathematics). Solve previous 10 years' JEE Main and Advanced papers. Take a chapter-wise test, then a full-length mock every week in the last 3 months. Focus on speed, accuracy, and elimination strategies.

Career & College Impact

A top percentile in JEE Main opens doors to NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IIITs, and prestigious branches like Computer Science, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. It is also the mandatory step toward JEE Advanced, leading to the IITs — institutions whose graduates lead Indian and global tech, research, finance, and entrepreneurship.
