NEET UG Complete Guide
NEET UG Overview
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is the single largest medical entrance examination in India. It is the mandatory gateway for admission to MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, and other undergraduate medical and allied health science courses across all government and private colleges in India, including AIIMS and JIPMER.
Exam Pattern
NEET UG is a 3 hour 20 minute pen-and-paper test with 200 multiple-choice questions, of which 180 must be answered. The paper is divided into Physics (45+5), Chemistry (45+5), and Biology — Botany (45+5) and Zoology (45+5). Each correct answer earns +4 marks; each wrong answer carries –1 (negative marking). The total possible score is 720.
Subjects Covered
- Physics — mechanics, electrodynamics, optics, modern physics, thermodynamics
- Chemistry — physical chemistry, organic reactions and named reactions, inorganic chemistry
- Botany — plant physiology, reproduction, ecology, biotechnology, genetics
- Zoology — human physiology, evolution, animal kingdom, biomolecules
Preparation Strategy
NCERT (Class 11 and 12, especially Biology) is the bible for NEET — nearly 80–85% of Biology questions come directly from NCERT. Make summary notes of every chapter. For Physics, prioritize concept clarity and numerical practice over memorization. For Chemistry, focus on organic mechanisms and inorganic NCERT line-by-line. Solve previous 10 years' NEET papers and take full-length mocks every week in the last 3 months.
Career & Medical Impact
A high NEET UG score (650+ for top government colleges) leads to admission in AIIMS Delhi, MAMC, JIPMER, AFMC, and other top medical institutes. Beyond MBBS, qualifiers can pursue dentistry, Ayurveda, homeopathy, and veterinary science. A medical degree from a respected Indian institution opens global pathways to PG specialization, research, and clinical practice.
