UGC NET Complete Guide
UGC NET Overview
The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is the qualifying examination for the post of Assistant Professor and for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges. Held twice a year (June and December), it is also accepted for direct recruitment to PSU positions and has expanded to include eligibility for PhD admissions in central universities.
Exam Pattern
UGC NET is a 3-hour computer-based test with two papers attempted in a single 180-minute slot. Paper 1 (50 MCQs, 100 marks) tests teaching and research aptitude — common to all candidates. Paper 2 (100 MCQs, 200 marks) is subject-specific from the candidate's chosen subject (out of 84 available subjects). Each correct answer earns +2 marks; there is no negative marking, making it crucial to attempt every question.
Subjects Covered
- Paper 1 — Teaching Aptitude, Research Aptitude, Reading Comprehension, Communication, Reasoning, Data Interpretation, ICT, People & Environment, Higher Education System
- Paper 2 — chosen from 84 subjects: Commerce, Economics, English, History, Political Science, Education, Computer Science, Management, Sociology, Psychology, etc.
Preparation Strategy
For Paper 1, study the Trueman's UGC NET / Arihant guide and practice previous years' questions. Most concepts repeat. For Paper 2, refer to standard PG-level textbooks for your subject and the official UGC syllabus. Make concise notes by syllabus unit. Take full-length mocks every two weeks. Since there's no negative marking, train yourself to attempt all 150 questions confidently.
Career Opportunities
Qualifying NET makes you eligible for Assistant Professor positions in central, state, and private universities. Securing JRF (top ~6% of candidates) provides a monthly fellowship of ₹37,000 + HRA for two years, extendable on confirmation of PhD progress. NET-qualified candidates are also eligible for several PSU and government research positions, and the qualification is a prerequisite for Indian academic careers.
