NDA / CDS Complete Guide
NDA & CDS Overview
The National Defence Academy (NDA) and Combined Defence Services (CDS) examinations, both conducted by the UPSC, are the primary gateways to officer-rank careers in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. NDA recruits candidates after Class 12 for joint pre-commission training, while CDS recruits graduates for direct commission through the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Officers' Training Academy (OTA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Air Force Academy (AFA).
Exam Pattern
The NDA written exam has two papers: Mathematics (300 marks, 2.5 hours) and General Ability Test (600 marks, 2.5 hours). The CDS exam has three papers — English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics (each 100 marks, 2 hours). After the written test, candidates undergo the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview, which is a 5-day assessment of officer-like qualities (OLQ).
Subjects Covered
- Mathematics — algebra, trigonometry, calculus, geometry, statistics
- English — comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, error spotting, essay writing (CDS)
- General Knowledge — Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Current Affairs
Preparation Strategy
For Mathematics, focus on NCERT Class 11–12 books and Pathfinder by Arihant. For GK, build a strong base in History, Geography, and Polity from NCERTs, then update daily with newspapers. For English, read editorials and practice grammar from Wren & Martin. Solve previous 10 years' papers. For SSB, practice psychological tests, group discussions, and command tasks. Physical fitness training is essential — start morning runs and bodyweight exercises early.
Career & Service Impact
NDA cadets receive 3 years of training at Khadakwasla followed by service academy training, and join as Lieutenants/Sub-Lieutenants/Flying Officers. CDS recruits become officers after about 1.5 years of training. The career offers leadership, adventure, lifelong honor, attractive pay (Pay Level 10 onwards), accommodations, medical benefits for the family, pensions, and the unique privilege of serving the nation.
