CAT Complete Guide
CAT (Common Admission Test) Overview
The Common Admission Test (CAT) is the most prestigious management entrance examination in India. Conducted annually by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) on a rotational basis, CAT is the gateway to MBA / PGP programs at all 21 IIMs and over 1,200 other top B-schools across India, including FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR, IITs (DoMS), and IISc Bangalore.
Exam Pattern
CAT is a 2-hour computer-based test with 66 questions divided into three sections (40 minutes each): Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (24 questions), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (20 questions), and Quantitative Ability (22 questions). Each section is timed independently. Each correct answer earns +3 marks; MCQs have –1 negative marking, while non-MCQs (TITA) have no penalty.
Subjects Covered
- VARC — reading comprehension, para-jumbles, para-summary, sentence completion
- DILR — caselets, tables, graphs, arrangements, blood relations, syllogisms
- QA — arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number system, modern math
Preparation Strategy
Effective CAT preparation typically takes 6–9 months. Start by building reading speed and vocabulary — read editorials from The Hindu and The Economist daily. For DILR, practice variety; CAT favors fresh sets that test reasoning rather than memorized patterns. For Quant, master arithmetic and number system, which together cover ~50% of QA. Take a sectional test every 3 days and a full mock once a week in the last 4 months. Analyze every mock to identify weaknesses.
Career & MBA Impact
A 99+ percentile in CAT secures interview calls from the top IIMs (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore). An MBA from these institutions leads to careers in consulting (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), finance (Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan), product management (Google, Amazon, Microsoft), and entrepreneurship — with average packages exceeding ₹30 LPA at top schools.
